The Center’s study of Governance Practices in an Era of Health Care Transformation received wide distribution this year through AHA publications and educational programs, as well as presentation requests from state hospital associations and individual hospitals and systems.
In 2013, the Center also continued the dialogue with health care organization and association trustees and executives, governance consultants, researchers and other experts about how boards can add value during times of significant change, resulting in The Value of Governance.
Participants in the ongoing dialogue addressed the following questions:
- What does it mean to bring greater value to the community through board service?
- What are boards doing now that they could do better?
- What are boards not doing now that they should be doing?
- What should boards stop doing that doesn’t add value?
- What would health care organizations be like if they didn’t have boards?
This publication shares their perspectives and suggestions for how boards can transform their own governance practices to better govern their transforming health care organizations. It includes questions for discussion as well as an exercise boards can undertake to begin moving toward transformational governance.
